Mark Dobek
Skating to the Finish Line
My name is Mark Dobek and I’m from Westfield, Massachusetts where I attended a small Roman Catholic high school called St. Mary’s High School; both my mother and grandmother attended. Currently I am a senior enrolled at Southern New Hampshire University, where I am pursuing a degree in the Bachelor of Science in Marketing with a minor in sports management. At Southern New Hampshire University, I played varsity men’s tennis, where I won a NE-10 championship in 2014. Early in my life I developed a love for sports, especially for hockey. My mother was a professional figure skater so I began skating at the age of three and fell in love with the sport of hockey from then on. Hockey is not the only sport I played while growing up, I also participated in baseball, soccer, golf, cross-country, tennis, and basketball. My other interests include hiking, art, going to the beach, reading, regularly exercising, listening to music, and playing with my cats and dog. Throughout the early years of my life growing up my parents encouraged me to give back to the less fortune. My mother and I would help teach “learn to skate” sessions for young children and later on be involved in the Hartford Inner City Skating Program as well as making frequent trip to the animal shelter to donate animal toys and help out with the animals. All throughout my years of high school I was a three-sport athlete with high honors. Carrying that work ethic into college, I received a presidential scholarship, consecutively made the President’s List, and became a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.
As a person, I encompass numerous qualities and characteristics that are valuable; having an unbelievable work ethic accompanied with exceptional time management skills and backed by perseverance. When assigned a task, I will get an early start and be fully driven and focused on it’s completion, while ensuring that I balance my time well between work, exercising, and socializing. Personally, I pride myself on being a loyal, trustworthy individual and I truly standing by the people that care for me. Working in a team setting is where I excel because I have played team sports my whole life; which has allowed me to develop good communication skills, the ability to listen and intake other’s opinions, and knowing how to deescalate problems. Encompassing all the qualities of a great leader, I have excellent communications skills, management skills, confidence, work ethic, and trustworthiness. What drives me to meet all of my goals is the loss of my mother in the fall of 2014. This unfortunate situation made me grow up fast and focus more on the things that matter in my life. Since the tragedy, I have never been more motivated to accomplish my goals. Everything I do, I give one hundred percent effort in because I know my mom’s watching down on me and I want to make her proud.
With all that being said, I hope you enjoy my E-Portfolio I have prepared!
